Welcome

Turmoil in CharlottesvilleOur community of Charlottesville is facing challenging times that question our values, faith and our alliances. As a Christian faith community, our only alliance is to Christ. All our actions, words and commitments come from our commitment to witness God's radical love toward us. We engage hate, discrimination, injustice and all evil by speaking truth in love, practicing radical hospitality, showing compassion to all without discrimination, and most of all, prayerfully listening to direction from Christ.

Jesus promises to all of us: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27)

St. Mark Lutheran Church affirms the boundless love of God for all of God’s children. All people are welcome to worship with us, to join our congregation, to participate in the mission and ministry to which God is calling us in our community, and to share in all aspects of our life together as the people of God.

St. Mark Lutheran Church explicitly welcomes all people, regardless of race, gender, sexual identity, ethnicity, national origin, socio-economic and professional status, education, or physical and mental abilities.

We specifically affirm that all people are:

  • Beloved children of God
  • Welcome to share in the full fellowship we all enjoy as brothers and sisters in Christ
  • Welcome to participate in all aspects of the life and ministry of St. Mark Lutheran Church as members of the congregation

In Matthew 25:35, Jesus said. "I was a stranger and you welcomed me." Our Lord not only commanded us to welcome the stranger, Jesus made it clear that when we welcome the stranger into our homes and our hearts - we welcome him.

As a Reconciling in Christ congregation, we specifically affirm:

  • That gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons are beloved children of God
  • That gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons, partners, and families are welcome to share in the full fellowship we all enjoy as brothers and sisters in Christ.
  • That gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons, partners, and families are welcome to participate in all aspects of the life and ministry of St. Mark Lutheran Church as members of the congregation
